5-Axis Freeform Surface Milling using Piecewise Ruled Surface Approximation

چکیده
This paper presents a 5-axis side milling scheme for freeform surfaces based on automatic piecewise ruled surface approximation. With this scheme, resulting surface nish is accurate and pleasing, and has a smaller scallop height compared to ball-end milling. The ruled surface approximation can be made arbitrarily precise resulting in an overall fast milling operation that satis es tight tolerances, and smoother surface nish. The class of surfaces that can take advantage of this type of 5-axis milling operation includes both convex and saddle-like (hyperbolic) shapes.

متن کاملSurface Region Optimization
A regional optimization of automatically generated machining toolpath for computer based freeform mechanical models is considered in the framework of multi-axis (three to ve) machining operations. Consider a trichotomy of an arbitrary freeform shaped surface into convex, concave and saddle-like regions. Saddle-like and concave regions can be milled using a ball end tool, in a 3or a 5-axis mode....
متن کاملMulti-dimensional dynamic programming in ruled surface fitting
Ruled surfaces play an important role in many manufacturing and construction applications. In this work, we explore a multidimensional dynamic programming based ruled surface fitting scheme to a given freeform rational surface, S. Considering two initial opposite boundaries of S, sampled into a discrete piecewise linear polyline representation, the ruled surface fitting problem is reduced to a ...
متن کاملImproved Tool Positioning in 5-Axis Flank Milling by Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation
This paper presents an improved tool positioning strategy in the 5-axis flank milling of a ruled surface by using simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) techniques. The SPSA allows the near-global optimization of the machining error, even though the corresponding objective is not formulated as a closed-form representation. It adjusts all cutter locations of a tool path simult...
متن کاملError bounded piecewise linear approximation of freeform surfaces
We present two methods for piecewise linear approximation of freeform surfaces. One scheme exploits an intermediate bilinear approximation and the other employs global curvature bounds. Both methods attempt to adaptively create piecewise linear approximations of the surfaces, employing the maximum norm.
